Indicators for Demographic Research: A Cross-national Assessment
Abstract:
Scientometric studies are conducted in order to assess the quantitative and qualitative development of subjects, especially in sciences. The research and development efforts in the field of demography have brought out tremendous literature. Therefore, there is a need to conduct a scientometric study in the field of demography to assess the qualitative and quantitative developments of this field of knowledge. The present paper is an attempt to assess the research output based on the distribution of publications in different sub-specialties of demography.

Research on Spices in Asia: A Bibliometric Study
Abstract:
A scientometric analysis of major spices research literature published in Asian countries between 1968 and 2002 was undertaken using the HORT-CD database. Asian countries are the major producers, marketers, and consumers of spices in the world; hence, R&D activity is assumed to be significant on this subject. The major spices examined are chilly, pepper, garlic, ginger, turmeric, and cardamom. This paper investigates the most prolific authors and their affiliations as well as key journals covering major spices in the Asian region.

Utilisation of Library and Information Services of Public Libraries in Punjab: A Case Study
Abstract:
In the present era, information is vital for the socio-economic and political development of a nation. The information-seeking behaviour of users has changed due to the electronic information environment. This study discusses the findings of a survey of users of public libraries in Punjab. It identifies their needs and assesses the quality of library services provided. The authors highlight that the usage of public library services by female users is significantly low and requires serious attention from the state library authorities.

Information Services in Agricultural University Libraries in Maharashtra: A Case Study
Abstract:
Succinctly describes the present status of information services in agricultural university libraries in Maharashtra, the changing scenario of information services, and requirements for the development of agriculture, agricultural education, and research in India. A survey of the information services across four agricultural university libraries was conducted; it concludes that developing computerized and digitalized information services via enhanced financial and human resources is imperative.

Promoting Effective Use of Electronic Resources in the Higher Technical Education Institutions
Abstract:
The Internet and the universal adoption of the World Wide Web enable the distribution of scholarly communication more widely. Electronic resources have become the format of choice for academic library patrons, offering users opportunities unavailable to their predecessors. In library science, promotion is the work of informing end-users about new services to secure survival and prosperity. This research identifies promotional methods adopted across libraries of 18 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) for effective promotion of electronic resources.

E-Journals and Libraries: Vexing Issues
Abstract:
Journals play a vital role in research and development activities. The majority of university and special libraries spend a major portion of their budget on journal acquisition. Due to the advent of information technology, a paradigm shift from print journals to electronic serials has occurred over the past decade. Access to e-journals offers enormous benefits; hence, universities and research institutions subscribe directly from publishers or join library consortia. This paper discusses in detail the problems and prospects of e-journals in the Indian academic environment.

National Information System in Humanities (NISH): A Proposal
Abstract:
States the important role that libraries play in promoting research and scholarly pursuits across the humanities. A structural model is proposed for establishing a national information system in the humanities along the lines of NISCAIR in the natural sciences and NASSDOC in the social sciences. Implementing such a system will bring humanities libraries and information centres on par with other domains in the universe of knowledge, enabling efficient inter-institutional networking.

Marketing of Information Products and Services: A Study of the Attitude of the Professional Staff Working at Guru Nanak Dev University Library
Abstract:
Attempts to assess the attitude of the professional library staff working at Guru Nanak Dev University Library towards concepts of marketing information services and products. Using a structured questionnaire, survey findings reveal that library personnel exhibit a positive orientation toward various facets of information marketing. Constructive proposals are offered to implement strategic service marketing.
