Welcome to the Department of Library & Information Science, University of Delhi, for the Academic Session 2026–27.
It is with immense pride and great pleasure that we welcome you to the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Delhi, a centre of academic distinction, intellectual innovation, "Best Library and Information Science Education in India 2025" awarded by IATLIS and professional excellence that has shaped generations of information professionals for nearly eight decades.
Founded upon the visionary ideals of the pioneers of Library and Information Science, most notably Padma Shri Dr S R Ranganathan, the father of Library Science in India, the Department has remained at the forefront of teaching, research, and scholarly leadership. Through its unwavering commitment to academic rigour and societal relevance, it has played a transformative role in advancing information education and knowledge systems across the nation and beyond.
We live in an era defined by the unprecedented growth of information, digital technologies, and artificial intelligence. Recognising these emerging realities, the department offers forward-looking academic programmes at the Bachelor of Library and Information Science (B.L.I.Sc.), Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.Sc.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) levels. These programmes seamlessly integrate the enduring principles of knowledge organisation, information retrieval, and library management with contemporary domains such as digital libraries, metadata standards, research analytics, scholarly communication, data science, and artificial intelligence.
